WAGNER

Siegfried Idyl

A private love letter turned orchestral treasure, Siegfried Idyl opens the afternoon with warmth and intimacy. Written as a birthday gift for his wife, Wagner’s music unfolds gently—lyrical, tender, and deeply personal—drawing the audience into a world of quiet beauty before the program expands outward.

COPELAND

Appalachian Spring

Open landscapes. Fresh beginnings. Copland’s Appalachian Spring captures the optimism of American possibility with clarity and grace. Built around the Shaker hymn “Simple Gifts,” the work feels spacious and luminous—music that breathes, uplifts, and carries the spirit of renewal.

DE FALLA

El amor brujo

Rhythm ignites. Passion takes center stage. In de Falla’s El amor brujo, orchestral color and flamenco fire collide in a story of love, longing, and ritual. With driving percussion and the iconic “Ritual Fire Dance,” this finale surges with intensity—where movement and music fuse in dramatic crescendo.

Barbara Dever

Mezzo-Soprano Metropolitan Opera

Barbara Dever is a commanding mezzo-soprano whose voice has resonated on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera for more than a decade and a half. Since her debut in 1994, she has performed across 16 seasons at the Met, bringing depth and dramatic power to roles in Wagner, Verdi, and Strauss.

Renowned for her rich tone and emotional authority, Dever’s repertoire includes iconic roles such as Amneris in Aida, Azucena in Il trovatore, Eboli in Don Carlo, and Herodias in Salome. Her performances are marked by intensity, nuance, and vocal strength built for the grandest stages.

In Exhilarating Contrasts, Dever lends that same operatic force to a program that moves from intimacy to fire — a voice that grounds the evening in experience and gravitas.

Liliana Ruiz

Flamenco Artist

Born and raised in Mexico City, Liliana Ruiz began her training in classical ballet at the age of six before immersing herself in Classical Spanish and flamenco dance. Her artistry bridges tradition and theatricality, blending precise technique with the emotional intensity that defines flamenco.

Ruiz has performed in major venues in both Mexico and the United States, including appearances connected to productions featuring Plácido Domingo and performances at Philadelphia’s Kimmel Center. Her work with symphonies and orchestras brings a visceral physical dimension to orchestral music — transforming rhythm into storytelling.

In Exhilarating Contrasts, Ruiz embodies the ritual and passion of de Falla’s El amor brujo, where movement and music ignite together in a finale of fire and rhythm.

Opera & Flamenco, Performed Live

Saturday, March 21 • 3:00 PM

Guaracini Performing Arts Center

Rowan College of South Jersey – Cumberland

Vineland, NJ

This performance doesn’t simply move from piece to piece — it moves through moods. From the intimate warmth of Wagner’s private love letter, to the open-air optimism of Copland’s Appalachian Spring, and finally into the rhythmic intensity of de Falla’s El amor brujo, the program unfolds as a study in contrast — tenderness, hope, and fire.

Wagner’s intimacy. Copland’s hope. De Falla’s ritual—brought to life with mezzo soprano Barbara Dever and flamenco artist Liliana Ruiz.
